Social Events

Welcome Reception

EMC 2008 will welcome all delegates of the Congress with a reception which will be held on Sunday, August 31, from 17:00 to 20:00. The welcome reception will take place in the Lenné Pavillion of the Casino Aachen, which is close to the Eurogress Congress Centre.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Opening Ceremony of EMC 2008 will start on monday morning, September 1. In the framework of this ceremony, the winners of the FEI European Microscopy Awards will present their lectures. The Closing Ceremony will take place after the final sessions on friday at lunchtime. Light refreshments will be served.

Congress Diner

The Congress Dinner (not included in the registration fee) will be held on thursday, September 4 in the world-famous Town Hall of Aachen. The gothic city hall dates back to Charlemagne and has hosted the celebration of 32 German Kings. Together with the cathedral it forms the city centre of Aachen.

Organ Recital

On Monday evening, Sep. 1, an Organ Recital in the world famous cathedral will be offered free of charge to all participants. The recital will be preceded by a short introduction to the history of Aachen Cathedral.

Accompanying Person Programme

For accompanying persons we offer walking tours and excursions which will allow to get to know Aachen and its beautiful vicinity. The following tours will be offered an can be booked through the registration pages:

1.)   Guided tour of the old town incl. visit of a ‘Printen’ Bakery
        Mon. Sep. 1, 2008 (14:00-17:00 h, € 10,-/person)

2.)   Combined guided tour of the cathedral and treasury
        Tue. Sep. 2, 2008 (10:00-11:30 h, € 6,-/person)

3.)   Guided tour of ‘Couven-Museum’ incl. visit in a café with a coffee set
        Tue. Sep. 2, 2008 (15:00-17:00 h, € 10,- /person)

4.)   Guided bus tour to Maastricht (NL) ()
        Wed. Sep. 3, 2008 (09:00-15:00 h, € 35,- /person)

5.)   Guided bus tour to Monschau (Eifel)
        Thu. Sep. 4, 2008 (09:00-15:00 h, € 35,- /person)
